Weather Watch - Surge Updates

03/01/2015

Full moon serves on Monday 5th January 2015. The highest tides of this group occur on the 6th, 7th and 8th. The tide is expected to reach 5.7 metres above local chart datum. This can vary considerably depending on outside influences. Yesterday, the 2nd Friday although the tide was expected to reach 5.3 metres ACD in fact it reached 5.8 metres, ½ of a metre above prediction due to the brisk north west wind.

The tidal phrases coincide with those of the moon. We start now at full moon and high tides. The tides drop off for a few days when the tides will be small, they then start to make again until just after new moon on the 20th January when they will reach 6.2 metres ACD. This is potentially a dangerously high tide. Depending on many factors such as wind speed and direction and barometric pressure this could be much higher or conversely much lower.

After the 24th the tides drop off again until making up again until just after the next new moon on the 3rd Feb. when they may be a relatively low 5.7 metres ACD.

Tides generally are higher just after new moon than they are just after full moon.

This completes a tidal circle of about 28 days which coincides with a moons phase of 28 days.

Indications are in a few days winds will be very strong but from a westerly direction so tidal surges are unlikely but this could change.

Until the end of the week I will be monitoring the tides and weather closely.
